96-Year-Old Woman Gets Trapped Inside Motorized Murphy Bed After Malfunction: ‘I Passed Out As The Bed Started To Crunch Me’

It is reported that the elderly woman — identified as Carol Smith, of Montreal, Canada — was left traumatized after the motorized Murphy bed ate her up. She says she can still hear the sound of the special bed’s electronic motor ringing her head.

Smith says the incident put her in the hospital just days after her 93rd birthday in late December. At the time, Smith claims she was staying at her daughter and son-in-law’s house for the holidays.

However, when she decided to go to bed, the bed in the family’s guest room happened to be a Murphy bed, which is a wall bed, that which folds up when not in use. According to Smith’s daughter and her family, they chose the bed for their guest room and purchased it from a company called Lit Mural back in 2020.

After Smith had fallen asleep, she soon woke up to the sound of a motor going off, and then she felt the bed as it was closing up into the wall.

However, she noted, “At first, it didn’t register and then suddenly it registered with me, ‘I’ve got to get out of this thing. Suddenly, I couldn’t move at all. And then I must have passed out because I could feel the bed starting to crunch me.”

Once she did realize what was happening, Smith said she tried to get up and reach for the bed’s remote control — which her son-in-law, John Hanrahan, claimed was on a dresser across the room. Being that she could not get to the remote, Smith said she just kept calling out for her daughter or someone to come rescue her.

Fortunately, Smith’s son-in-law was working on the first floor of the home, and was able to just barely hear her crying out. The son-in-law said, “This was very early in the morning. My wife, Caroline, thought maybe it was just nightmares.” The son-in-law had his wife rush over to her mother to check on her.

Upon entering the room, Smith’s daughter saw that the motorized Murphy bed wasn’t fully closed and realized that the crack left open, preventing the bed from fully closing, was her mother who was being crushed inside.

Smith’s daughter said, “I thought, ‘Oh my God, she must be in there.’ And I’m calling and there’s nothing.” She also said that she immediately rushed to grab the remote to release her mother from entrapment, but it didn’t work.

She explained, “I just started pushing all the buttons and nothing happened. So I ran round to the side of the bed, and I just threw the remote down on the floor and grabbed the end of the bed to try and pull it down. I couldn’t budge it.”

Being so, she called for her husband to come assist. When he entered the room, he grabbed a black metal bar that was at the top of the bed, and began yanking on it. He pulled down on the frame as best as he could; breaking the bed’s pistons, until it came slamming down on top of him, pushing him to the floor.

When Smith’s daughter and her husband checked on her, they found her at the head of the bed, curled up in the fetal position, and unresponsive. The daughter said, “She was grey, and she wasn’t breathing. I just freaked out. I started crying and yelling at her, ‘Don’t go! Wake up! Wake up!”

Smith’s daughter ended up calling her daughter over to perform CPR and get her breathing again until an ambulance arrived to take her to a hospital — where she was treated for two broken ribs, and weeks later, was diagnosed with a clavicle separated from the shoulder.

The maker of the bed claims they “can’t understand” how the scary incident happened.
