Gloria Serge, 85, was walking her dog on Monday when the alligator attacked it. Serge was killed while attempting to save her beloved pet from the massive reptile, but her dog survived. Serge’s neighbor told WPBF that she saw the alligator bite down on her leg and pull her into the water.

“I saw my neighbor down and being bitten on the leg by an alligator and pulled into the water. I just remember her coming up and pushing her hair out of her face and getting air, and I’m saying, ‘Swim toward the paddle boats!’ She says, ‘I can’t, the gator has me,” she explained to WPBF. The neighbor went on to say that she ran to her garage to get something to hit the gator with, but Serge had already left when she returned to the water.

Serge’s neighbor said she felt helpless as there was nothing she could do to rescue her friend. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call regarding the alligator, which was captured a few hours after officials placed a trapper on the premises.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim,” the FWC said in a statement. “The FWC places the highest priority on public safety and administers a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) to address complaints concerning specific alligators believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property.”

The alligator was an estimated 600-700 pounds at a length of 11 feet. However, what happened to the reptile after it was apprehended was unclear.

An alligator was also spotted and captured at a park in New York City

The 4-foot alligator named “Godzilla” was discovered Sunday by Prospect Park employees in Brooklyn. After it was captured, Godzilla was transported to the Bronx Zoo, and NYC Parks officials said the reptile appeared to be “very lethargic and possibly cold shocked” when it was discovered. It is unclear how the alligator ended up in the lake, but officials warned residents not to release animals into the parks since it is illegal.

Additionally. releasing animals into the parks can harm the ecosystem and native species.
