An elderly Asian woman fought back against her attacker after he assaulted her and another elderly man in California’s Bay Area.

The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m Wednesday on Market Street when the unknown 39-year-old man attacked the 75-year-old woman and prior to this attack, he also assaulted an 83-year-old Asian man. Moments after, the unknown woman fought back and attacked him with a stick, sending him on a stretcher with blood on his face. In Chinese, the woman asks the man “You bum, why did you hit me?” as EMTs pushed him on the stretcher.
She told authorities that she was leaning on a pole when the man randomly punched her several times before a nearby security guard intervened as reported by SF Gate.

Police said in a statement to the outlet that investigators are currently looking into if “bias played a motivating factor in the incident.” Amid the increase in violence against Asians in the United States, people praised the woman for her bravery and for defending herself against the attacker.
