The estate belonging to former NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. has received a partial settlement after filing a lawsuit. In their complaint it was claimed that Haskins was “blackmailed, drugged and robbed,” before he was fatally struck by an old dump truck. He was hit while standing drunk on a highway after his rental truck ran out of gas.
At the age of 24, Haskins — who had last been contracted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 as a free agent — sadly died in South Florida back on April 9, 2022. After his a truck he had rented ran out of fuel, Haskins left his vehicle and attempted to cross the road to get help, ultimately leading to him being struck and killed by a dump truck. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death an accident, which has since been challenged by his estate.
At the time of his death, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter broke the news, and it was followed with a statement from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who said, “I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins. He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”

A year after Haskins’ death, his estate’s attorney, Rick Ellsley, filed a lawsuit and alleged that the former NFL player was “blackmailed, drugged and robbed” by a man and three women before his death; further alleging that his death was not an accident as ruled by the medical examiner.
On April 10, 2023, Ellsley, said, “Many questions remain as to why the truck driver did not avoid hitting Dwayne given the highly visible activity in the area before the impact and the fact that the other drivers did not hit Dwayne. There were multiple other drivers who were driving in front of and behind the dump truck and saw Dwayne on the roadway and avoided hitting him. A few drivers even had time to call 911 and were present in the area before Dwayne was hit.”

Ellsley also claimed, “The truck driver’s cell phone records have not yet been disclosed. The [Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Report] also notes that the driver refused to provide a blood sample to the police at the scene and still has not provided the alcohol test results.”
Ellsley’s statement then alleged that prior to Haskins’ death, “it is believed that [he] was targeted and drugged as part of a blackmail and robbery conspiracy. In fact, his high-expensive watch was stolen from him shortly before his death.”
The allegations regarding the dump truck driver claim that they were intentionally speeding, and driving carelessly with cargo above the legal weight limit, and that the truck was old with brake system problems, and with low tread tires with separated sidewalls.
It’s also alleged that Haskins was given a rental truck that had a “mechanical defect”of its own, causing him to run out of gas in the middle of the highway. The suit also accused the highway department of: not properly maintaining and lighting the roadway; failing to post a lower speed limit for construction; and having a temporary sign blocking visibility for drivers.
Four months following the news of the Haskins estate lawsuit, it’s now being reported that the family, including Haskins’ widow Kalabrya Haskins, has reached a partial settlement as of Friday (August 18). Haskins’ estate said settlements have been negotiated with the driver of the dump truck, the dump truck owner, and dump truck broker for an undisclosed sum of money; however, other matters still need to be addressed with 10 other defendants.
Also, regarding the allegations of Haskins being drugged, a toxicology report has confirmed the presence of alcohol, noting he was legally drunk and had blood alcohol levels of .20 and .24, well above the limit of .08.
