Upon their arrival, officers found Williams’ lifeless body. A medical examiner eventually ruled that the actor, who had been open about his struggles with drug addiction, had died of an accidental overdose.

On Wednesday (April 5, 2023) inside of a Manhattan, New York federal court, the dealer — identified as 39-year-old Irvin Cartagena — pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to distribute drugs (heroin, fentanyl and fentanyl analogue).
Cartagena is due to be sentenced on August 18, as ordered by U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams. Currently, Cartagena is facing a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, with the possibility of as many as 40 years behind bars.

It is reported that Cartagena signed a plea agreement with prosecutors, which states that the combination of heroin and fentanyl drugs that he sold to Williams, is what resulted in the actor’s death.
Cartagena’s attorney, Sean Maher, has yet to comment on the recent guilty plea entered by his client.
Elsewhere, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, who is reported to have no relation to the deceased actor, released a statement about the sale that occurred in “broad daylight in New York City, feeding addiction and causing tragedy.” Williams said, “In doing so, he dealt the fatal dose that killed Michael K. Williams.”

As we’ve previously reported, Cartagena is just one of four people charged in connection with the 2021 overdose death of Williams. It is reported that another defendant in the case has also pleaded guilty, as of Tuesday (April 4).
However, prosecutors say Cartagena is the one who did the hand-to-hand transaction with Williams back on September 5, 2021, just one day before he was found dead. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, “Williams died as a result of using that fentanyl-laced heroin.”
Additionally, prosecutors say that Cartagena and his alleged co-conspirators, continued to sell fentanyl-laced heroin surrounding the residential apartment buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan, even after they learned that Williams died as a result of the drugs they had sold him.
