The news site reports that she sadly died Friday morning at her home in Detroit. “She went out strong,” her publicist said:

“It’s with a Heavy heart I announce this morning Dorothy Steel transitioned this morning in her hometown of Detroit. That is what she wanted  to be home. Thank you Ms. Dorothy for giving me the opportunity to ride this wave with you.  Thank you for all the Casting Directors who hired Ms. Dorothy.  Thank you to the world for loving on her from afar.”

Steel, who was born in 1926, made national headlines after it was shared that she didn’t land her first acting role until she was 88 years old. “Black Panther” was her first appearance on the big screen. In 2018, Steel told Channel 2 that Marvel casting directors called her just one hour after she sent in her audition tape. Her publicist said she was in the middle of filming “Black Panther 2” when she died.

She kickstarted her Hollywood career in 2015, with a guest-starring role in an episode of The Trouble with Going Somewhere. She later landed a recurring role in Bounce TV’s Saints & Sinners, also guest-starring in BET’s The Oval, and appearing in the holiday TV movies, Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses and Merry Christmas, Baby and more.

So far, a cause of death has not been disclosed and plans for a memorial have not yet been disclosed.
