A man from Tampa, Florida has been arrested after allegedly raping a DoorDash woman and then shooting at her family when they came to rescue her. According to a police report, the incident took place on April 18 when 38-year-old Joseph Killins approached the woman — whose identity has not been publicly revealed — and held her at gunpoint before forcing her to drive to the Belara Lakes Apartment complex. When they arrived, the victim – believed to be in her 20s – was allegedly raped.
Police say that while the woman was at the apartment, her family was tracked down her location, though it wasn’t mentioned how they knew she was in distress. When they arrived at the complex, Killins is accused of opening shooting at them before fleeing the scene. “The victim’s family, who had been tracking her phone, arrived and rescued her from the car. Killins responded by firing multiple times,” law enforcement officials revealed.
Oddly enough, Killins is said to have returned to the apartment complex the next day when he allegedly punched another woman in her face and stole her backpack. During their investigation, cops learned that both incidents were linked to the same person, and their search for the accused continued.
By Friday, however, Killins was found at the Tampa Inn hotel where he was arrested. He faces charges of robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery with a weapon, armed sexual battery, armed kidnapping, and robbery stemming from the attack on April 18. “We are appalled by this heinous and abhorrent crime. No one should ever have to endure something as horrific as this and we’re here to support the Dasher in any way we can,” a spokesperson for DoorDash said.
According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the state’s overall crime rate has been declining for the past several years. In 2020, the total number of reported crimes in Florida was 1,369,905, down from 1,435,265 in 2019. This represents a decrease of 4.6%, which is consistent with the national trend of declining crime rates.
Of course, there are some types of crime that are more prevalent in Florida than others. For example, property crimes such as theft and burglary are more common than violent crimes like assault and murder. In 2020, there were 732,190 reported property crimes in Florida, compared to 102,334 reported violent crimes. However, it’s important to remember that every crime, regardless of its severity, has a significant impact on the victim and their community.

One of the most common misconceptions about crime in Florida is that it is caused by tourists. Some people believe that the state’s high number of visitors each year leads to an increase in crime. However, the data does not support this claim. In fact, studies have shown that tourists are actually less likely to be victims of crime in Florida than residents.
Another common misconception is that crime is only a problem in certain parts of the state. While it’s true that some areas have higher crime rates than others, crime can and does happen anywhere. It’s important to be vigilant and take precautions no matter where you are in Florida.
