The excerpt was published by the Sunday Times where Mary described her experience at a PTSD treatment clinic in Tuscon, Arizona, and said she spent some time recovering from “decades-old” wounds. “I would be there for weeks, excavating decades-old wounds and trying to figure out why my uncle Donald’s elevation to the White House had so undone me,” she wrote. Trump added that she felt anger and rage for the first few days and felt shameful that the country made the decision to elect him.
“At least once a day, I would have this moment where it would dawn on me what had happened. It was surreal. Because I felt such shame, that the country had so debased itself.”

According to Insider, Mary’s second book about her uncle will discuss the trauma and turmoil the country faced during his presidency.
“The Reckoning will examine America’s national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration’s corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD—a new leader alone cannot fix us.”
