Donald Trump Terminates Kamala Harris’ Secret Service Protection

President Donald Trump has officially cut off Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, ending a layer of security Joe Biden quietly extended before leaving the White House. According to a letter obtained by CNN, Trump signed a directive instructing Homeland Security to shut down all extra security measures beyond what the law requires.

For context, federal law grants former vice presidents six months of Secret Service detail after leaving office. Harris’ coverage wrapped up on July 21. But Biden had secretly signed a memorandum giving her another year of protection — something that stayed under wraps until now.

That extra shield is exactly what Trump cancelled. The letter, labeled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security” and dated Thursday, stated:
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

Neither the White House nor the Secret Service immediately responded to requests for comment.

Kamala Harris Faces Security Concerns Ahead of Book Tour

Trump’s move comes at a critical time. Harris is about to launch her multi-city book tour for “107 Days,” her memoir that digs into her brief presidential campaign. The book is set to drop on September 23, meaning she’ll be in the public eye more than she has since leaving office.

Her senior adviser, Kirsten Allen, thanked the Secret Service in a statement to CNN:

“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Losing Secret Service protection isn’t just about bodyguards. It also means no more federal monitoring of threats, including social media activity, emails, or in-person risks. Sources close to Harris’ team say this leaves her exposed — especially given her history as the first Black woman and the first woman overall to serve as Vice President.

Why This Decision Raises Red Flags

Security risks in politics aren’t new. Trump himself dealt with two assassination attempts during his last campaign. That’s why ending Harris’ detail — especially now — is raising eyebrows.

Her LA home will no longer be guarded by federal agents, forcing her team to rely on private security. While Biden never explained why he extended Harris’ protection, insiders say the threats against her remained intense well into this year.

Cutting this coverage now means Harris could miss out on crucial federal threat warnings — alerts that private teams simply don’t have access to.
