Donald Trump Addresses Brown University Mass Shooting During Public Remarks

President Donald Trump paid his respects to the victims of the Brown University shooting on Sunday, addressing the tragedy during a broader set of public remarks. His comments came as authorities continued investigating the deadly incident that shook the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island.

At least two students were killed and nine others were injured during a Saturday shooting at Brown University, according to law enforcement officials. The incident sent shockwaves through the campus community and beyond, as students, families, and alumni struggled to process yet another episode of gun violence on a college campus.

Trump’s remarks were delivered while he was also discussing other global matters, including an Australian mass shooting and the situation in Syria. Even so, he paused to directly acknowledge the loss of life at Brown and to offer condolences to the families affected.

“I pay my respects to the people. Unfortunately, two are no longer with us, Brown University, and nine are injured. Two are looking down on us from heaven,” Trump said. “To the nine injured, get well fast,” Trump said. “To the families of the two who are no longer with us I pay my deepest regards and respects from the United States of America.”

His words came as the nation continued to grapple with recurring questions about campus safety, community healing, and the long road forward after mass violence. As previously reported university shootings often leave lasting emotional scars that extend far beyond the immediate victims.

What Happened at Brown University: Timeline of the Shooting

Authorities confirmed that the shooting occurred Saturday on or near the Brown University campus in Providence. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after reports of gunfire, while students were advised to shelter in place as police secured the area.

Providence Police Department Chief Oscar Perez addressed the public early Sunday morning, confirming the fatalities and injuries. He stated that a person of interest had been detained overnight but initially declined to share identifying details or confirm whether the individual had any affiliation with the university.
Later on Sunday, Perez provided additional clarity. He said the person of interest is in their 20s and that investigators are actively working to determine whether the individual has any connection to Brown University. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that information will continue to be released as it is verified.

Coventry police, who assisted the FBI in the apprehension, told WPRI that the individual was taken into custody without incident at approximately 3:45 a.m. local time. The arrest occurred at the Hampton Inn and Suites on Center of New England Boulevard. Authorities have not yet announced whether formal charges have been filed.

Meanwhile, campus officials worked to account for students, communicate with families, and coordinate counseling and support services. Vigils and memorial gatherings began forming almost immediately, as the Brown community leaned on one another in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Law Enforcement Response and Ongoing Investigation

Local, state, and federal authorities responded swiftly following the shooting. Providence Police, Coventry Police, and the FBI coordinated efforts to locate and detain the person of interest. Officials stressed that the arrest was made without resistance and that public safety was not compromised during the operation.
Chief Perez reiterated that investigators are still working to establish a motive and any possible connection between the suspect and the university. He also noted that law enforcement is reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and digital evidence as part of the investigation.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while the case develops. They emphasized that premature conclusions can hinder investigations and add unnecessary distress to victims’ families and the broader community.
