President Donald Trump speaks after a shooting at Providence, Rhode Island’s Brown University leaves at least 2 people dead and 9 others critically injured, with the suspect still at large.
While hosting a press conference Saturday evening (December 13), Providence Mayor Brett Smiley initially revealed at least two people were dead and 8 more are in critical, but stable condition after a mass shooting on Brown University’s campus.
Updated reports from a Brown University Health spokesperson say the injured count has risen to 9. One person is in stable condition, 6 are in critical, but stable condition, one more is stabilized, and another has non-life-threatening injuries (stemming from bullet fragments). All victims are confirmed as students of Brown University.
The University officials first claimed in an alert that one person was in custody. However, they shortly reversed the update, noting the suspect remains at large.
According to officials, the suspect was a male dressed in all black. Police also said the weapon has not been recovered, meaning the type of gun used is not known. The shooter is said to have ran away on the Hope Street side of the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building, where gunfire first erupted at 4:05 p.m. this afternoon.
Officials told everyone on campus and neighboring areas to shelter-in-place, lock their doors, silence their phones, and stay safe. At this time, a massive manhunt remains ongoing.

Following the incident, President Donald Trump confirmed he was briefed on the matter. On Truth Social, he wrote:
“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
Trump then updated his report, similarly to Brown University officials. He said, “The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement — the suspect is NOT in custody.” Trump spoke again with the press as he arrived at the White House on Marine One. He reiterated that he’d been briefed on the shooting. He said:
“I’ve been fully briefed on the Brown University situation. What a terrible thing it is, and all we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt. It’s a shame. It’s a shame. Just pray. Thank you very much.”
