Homeland Security Identifies Suspect In Washington D.C. National Guard Shooting; One Of Two Victims Dies

On Wednesday (November 26), several National Guard members were attacked in “ambush” just steps away from the White House. The Department of Homeland Security identified the suspect as 29-year-old Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who settled in Washington State under a Joe Biden-era program.

In the incident, police said the suspect, who acted as a “lone gunman” “ambushed” National Guard members. The shooter left two members, from the West Virginia National Guard, in critical condition, initially.

The first victim was identified as 20-year-old U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom. She was struck immediately and collapsed where she stood. She sustained at least two gunshot wounds. The suspect then reportedly took Beckstrom’s weapon and struck a second Guard member, 24-year-old U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe.

During the incident, a third Guard member, who was not injured, returned fire, striking the shooter, and ending the ambush. The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to the hospital upon arrest. The two victims were rushed to a hospital, undergoing emergency surgery. As of Thursday evening (November 27), Beckstrom did not survive. Meanwhile, Wolfe remains in critical condition, fighting for his life.

More On D.C. National Guard Shooting Suspect, Afghan National Rahmanullah Lakanwal

As the Department of Homeland Security and FBI Director Kash Patel identified the D.C. National Guard shooting suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, more information on his background began surfacing. We learned that he entered the U.S. in the SUmmer of 2021.

According to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Lakanwal was paroled into the country on September 8, 2021, under a Joe Biden-era program for Afghan nationals, called “Operation Allies Welcome.”

Under the program, thousands of Afghan nationals were welcomed into the country. The move arrived as the U.S. military withdrew from Afghanistan and the Taliban regained control of the country. Several Afghan nationals who worked with the military during the 20-year war were given special immigrant visas. Others received a temporary humanitarian status, known as parole.

Reportedly, officials granted more than 8,000 people from Afghanistan relief under a separate program, called “Temporary Protected Status.” In 2023, Biden then extended the program, however, Trump ended it earlier this year as he took office for a second term. Currently, Lakanwal’s immigration status is unclear.

Since the shooting incident, several law enforcement sources told CBS News that investigators suspect Lakanwal suffered from paranoia and other mental health issues, with him potentially believing authorities were trying to deport him. While answering questions about Lakanwal’s arrest, President Trump continues to put blame on Biden’s administration and argues down a reporter to do so.
