In a recent statement released on his Truth Social media platform, former President Donald Trump expressed his belief that abortion laws should be left to individual states to decide. This stance marks a departure from some of his previous comments and signals a hands-off approach to a contentious issue that has long divided the nation.
Following the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision, which overturned federal protections for abortion, Trump asserted that the states should have the authority to determine their own laws on the matter. Despite false claims that abortion was already legally accessible to all, Trump emphasized the importance of states deciding through votes or legislation, without endorsing a national ban.
He said this Monday in a video post, “My view is, now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote, or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land – in this case, the law of the state,” Trump said.
“Many states will be different. Many states will have a different number of weeks…at the end of the day it is all about the will of the people.”

This position contrasts with the views of some of his allies, such as Senator Lindsey Graham and former White House aide Kellyanne Conway, who have advocated for a national ban on abortion. While Trump had previously hinted at supporting a 15- or 16-week threshold for a national ban, he did not clarify his stance on the issue if elected president again.
Throughout his political career, Trump has displayed inconsistency on abortion policy, offering few specifics on his approach post-Roe v. Wade. Despite vague promises of being a voice of consensus on abortion, Trump’s statements have left room for interpretation, fueling speculation about his true intentions.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s campaign has seized on Trump’s shifting remarks on abortion, highlighting his past claims of influencing the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Biden has positioned himself as a defender of women’s rights, contrasting his stance with Trump’s perceived lack of trust in women’s autonomy.
He recently tweeted, “Donald Trump doesn’t trust women,” Biden says in a new ad. “I do.”
