President Donald Trump says he’s “not joking” about seeking a third presidential term, arguing there are “methods” to do it despite the legal restrictions spelled out in the Constitution. Currently, under the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, it is prohibited for a president to seek out a third term in the White House.
Now, this isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about this. In January 2025, Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed to amend the Constitution to give President Donald Trump a third presidential term. On January 23, Ogles drafted a constitutional amendment to allow Trump to be the first president to secure a third term.
The proposal would require the amending of the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution. The move would be incredibly difficult. It would require either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of the states agreeing to call a constitutional convention to propose the changes.

In a statement, Ogles said:
“This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
Then earlier this month, Steve Bannon, who served as White House Chief Strategist, told News Nation’s Chris Cuomo that he and others are working on ways for President Trump to seek a third time despite constitutional term limits. He said:
“We’re working on it. I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is. I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run and win again in 2028. We’ve had greater long shots than Trump 2028. [They’re] not prepared to talk about it publicly, but in a couple of months, I think we will be…. We’re in the middle of a 1932-type realignment if we can continue to have populist nationalist policies.”

President Donald Trump Reveals One ‘Method’ To Seeking Third Term
Now, it appears Donald Trump isn’t ruling out seeking a third presidential term in the White House. During a Sunday morning (March 30) phone call with NBC News, whom he called his allies, Trump said there are “methods” to secure a third term. Trump told NBC, “A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go. You know, it’s very early in the administration. I’m focused on the current.”
When asked to clarify his comments, he said, “I’m not joking. But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.” NBC hosts also asked Trump whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to secure a third term. He said, “There are methods which you could do it.”
NBC News asked if one of the methods included Vice President JD Vance running for office and then passing the position to Trump. He replied, “That’s one [method], but there are others too.” However, when asked if he could share another one, Trump simply replied, “No.”
