While speaking to reports Trump explained,

“Today I’m identifying houses of worship — churches, synagogues, and mosques — as essential places that provide essential services,” the Associated Press quotes.

“Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics is essential, but have left out churches and other houses of worship, it’s not right. So I am correcting this injustice am calling houses of worship essential. I call upon governors to allow churches and places of worship to open right now,” the president said. He went on to say that if governors don’t abide by his request, he will “override” them. However, it’s unclear what authority he has to do so.

Meanwhile, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had already prepared reopening guidelines for churches and other houses of worship weeks ago, but the White House had refused to release them until Thursday when Trump abruptly changed his mind.

The move comes as the number of coronavirus deaths have climbed, killing at least 95,000 Americans to date.
