Earlier today we shared that officials in Maine ruled that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to appear on the presidential ballot in 2024, in what would be his latest run for a second term as President. In response to the decision, Trump and his campaign team are firing back and appealing the state’s decision to bar him from their primary ballot. They’re calling the decision, “an attempted theft of an election.”

On Thursday (December 28), Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) determined that Trump’s actions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riots violated the 14th Amendment’s clause, which bars those who “assist insurrection” from taking office.

Bellows had argued that Trump “used a false narrative of election fraud to inflame his supporters and was aware of the likelihood for violence and at least initially supported its use given he both encouraged it with incendiary rhetoric and took no timely action to stop it.” Following Maine’s decision, former President Trump and his campaign quickly denounced it and attacked Shenna Bellows, deeming her a “virulent leftist and a hyper-partisan Biden-supporting Democrat.”

In a statement released on behalf of Trump, spokesperson Steven Cheung said, per The Hill, “We are witnessing, in real-time, the attempted theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American voter. Make no mistake, these partisan election interference efforts are a hostile assault on American democracy.”

Cheung added, “We know both the Constitution and the American people are on our side in this fight. President Trump’s dominating campaign has a commanding lead in the polls that has dramatically expanded as Crooked Joe Biden‘s presidency continues to fail.”

Before Maine’s decision, attorneys for Donald Trump had demanded that Bellows recuse herself from making any decisions on whether Trump should be placed on the presidential ballot. However, Bellow said that the request was “untimely.”

She added, “Had the motion been timely, I would have determined that I could preside over this matter impartially and without bias. My decision is based exclusively on the record before me, and it has in no way been influenced by my political affiliation or personal views about the events of January 6, 2021.”
