Donald Trump Admits To Cutting USPS Funding To Make It Harder To Vote By Mail

On Thursday, Donald Trump admitted to cutting USPS funding  in order to make it harder for citizens to vote by mail this upcoming election season.

Specifically, Trump said he opposes much-needed, additional $25 billion in funding for the federal agency, fully knowing that this action could potentially dissolve the United States Postal Service, which has been hit harder than ever amid the coronavirus pandemic. Trump’s recent comments are now fueling allegations that he’s attempting to manipulate the postal system for political gain. Due to the pandemic, voting-by-mail has become a main voting method, and Trump argues that it’ll lead to fraud, hurting his re-election.

Speaking with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump says, “They need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots. If they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting because they’re not equipped to have it. If we don’t make a deal that means they don’t get the money. That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting. They just can’t have it. Sort of a crazy thing.”

Countering Trump’s claims that additional funding is needed to process ballots this all, the new postmaster Louis DeJoy says, “The Postal Service has ample capacity to deliver all election mail securely and on-time in accordance with our delivery standards, and we will do so.”
