A chihuahua named Lumi was allegedly given methamphetamine on purpose by a teenager in the family. This poor little dog was brought to a Long Beach animal shelter after the incident took place, where she is now receiving treatment and medication to counter the effects of the deadly drug that’s plagued so many people’s lives in recent years. Lumi’s overdose could have easily resulted in instant death as she arrived at the shelter shaking, per FOX 11 Los Angeles, but thankfully she survived. However, she will likely suffer lifelong side effects from this traumatic experience and could potentially remain on medication for the rest of her life.
This incident sheds light on a worrying trend of animals overdosing on drugs, both legal and illegal. There is hope for Lumi as well as other animals in similar situations, but it’s too early to determine whether she’ll suffer from any complications after taking the drug. The dog may be taken to Open Arms Rescue if no adoptive family comes forward to provide her with a loving home, it’s been said.

Saving Imperial Rescue‘s Traci Schuver said, “The poor dog was literally tortured. We understand that addiction is a major problem and it’s a disease… we can be empathetic towards the person struggling with that addiction, but the minute they turn it over, and they start torturing an innocent animal, that’s when all bets are off and my empathy goes out the window.” An investigation into the case remains ongoing.
While it is important to focus on Lumi’s recovery and the efforts being made to help her, we must also address the larger issue at hand. The fact that animals are increasingly overdosing on drugs is deeply concerning. It highlights the need for stricter regulations and enforcement when it comes to drugs, both legal and illegal. It is our responsibility as a society to protect not only ourselves but also the vulnerable creatures that share our world.
This incident serves as a reminder that animals are not immune to the consequences of drug abuse. Whether it’s a chihuahua like Lumi or any other animal, they are all susceptible to the harmful effects of drugs if exposed. We must educate ourselves and others about the dangers of drug abuse and actively work towards creating a safer environment for these innocent beings.

The case of Lumi, the chihuahua who was allegedly given methamphetamine on purpose, is a tragic reminder of the cruelty that some animals face. It is heartening to see the efforts being made to help her recover and find a loving home. However, it also highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent such incidents from happening in the first place. Animals are not disposable objects; they are living beings deserving of love, care, and protection. Let us stand together in advocating for their well-being and ensuring that justice is served for Lumi and other animals who have suffered similar fates.
I certainly hope the owner (and their insanely ignorant son) who relinquished the dog to a shelter in this condition will be followed-up on by the authorities. This behavior is completely unacceptable. To the abuser, the dog was nothing more than a pawn used for twisted and disgusting enjoyment. Did the owner not even attempt to take the dog to a veterinarian? They merely dumped her at a shelter?
