Doctors saved the life of a Missouri man who needed a double lung transplant after his long-term vaping habit caused his organs to shut down by using breast implants.

34-year-old David Bauer’s health came to a halt when his lungs gave out in April, and doctors blamed his vaping habit after he caught the flu and an antibiotic-resistant lung infection. Doctors said Bauer’s lungs were so severely damaged that he required a double lung transplant and transferred him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Shortly after his transfer, Bauer suffered from cardiac arrest caused by the infection.
As a last-minute effort, Dr. Ankit Bharat said Bauer didn’t have time for a transplant. Hence, his team removed his lungs and placed a temporary pair of double-D breast implants to keep his heart in place so the blood could continue circulating, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Dr. Bharat told CNN that they needed to come up with a strategy that would save Bauer’s life and wanted to wait until the infection was clear along with a pair of donor’s lungs. A day later, Bauer was given a new set of lungs after the implants were removed.
‘In my personal opinion, vaping played a big part in how sick Davey got because he’s young and healthy otherwise. Lungs are designed to breathe clean air. They’re not designed to inhale smoke.’
Bauer’s GoFundMe said he is doing well and breathing independently with his new set of lungs. He was transferred to a rehabilitation center in Chicago, where he will spend 18 months in recovery, and his girlfriend, Susan, will take care of him during that time.
“Davey is making great progress! His transplant team cleared him to start eating food and drinking liquids a little over a week ago. Since then he’s been transported to Shirley Ryan rehab facility where they’ve been REALLY putting him to work, but he’s been thriving everyday! We now have our two pups, Penny and Bear, with us in Chicago and they’re trying to get used to the big city while not having their fenced in backyard to run around in. They’ve been doing well all things considered. We still have a very long road to recovery and rehabilitation and will have live in Chicago for at least the next 18 months. Again, we cannot thank you all enough for the continued shares, prayers and donations throughout this difficult time for our family. Thank you all so so much!”
