The country brand announced the news on their website Thursday, with the statement “We want to meet this moment.” The move comes as other bands decided to rebrand to remove racists connotations and links to slavery from their names.
They also released a press statement that said,
“A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to ‘The Chicks’ of [New Zealand] for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock!”
The Chicks also released a pro-protest song called “March,” along with their new name. The song is from their upcoming album Gaslighter, and touches on the fight for equality and social issues over the past decades.

“March, march to my own drum/ Hey, hey, I’m an army of one,” the women sing.

This is their first album in 14 years.
