An Atikamekw woman from Quebec, Canada recorded the last moments of her life when she experienced mistreatment from hospital staff.

According to CBC, Joyce Echaquan,37, went to Facebook Live to record the treatment she received at a hospital in Joliette after being admitted for stomach pains. The video shows Echaquan screaming in distress and repeatedly yelling for help after receiving too much morphine in French. One of the nurses says to the mother of seven, “You’re stupid as hell” while another chastises Echaquan for making “bad life choices” and asked what would she do if her children saw her in her current state.

A painful video of an Atikamekw woman in a Quebec hospital shows the nurses attending her to be rude and dismissive.
The woman died shortly after posting the video live on Facebook.

Echaquan’s husband said the video clearly shows the mistreatment his wife endured before her death and has to care for their seven children alone.
“I have seven children who find themselves without a mother, I am sad. I am so sad.”

After the video went viral on social media, one of the nurses was fired from the hospital. It has also prompted outrage nationwide indigenous women are reportedly mistreated in public areas in Quebec and other provinces in Canada.
Quebec Premier François Legault called the situation “unacceptable” and reportedly denied the mistreatment of indigenous people in the province.
“I really don’t think that we have this kind of way of dealing with First Nations people in our hospitals in Quebec. Yes, there is some racism in Quebec. We’re working on that,”
