District Attorney Says Deputies Who Fatally Shot Andrew Brown Jr. Were “Justified”

This Tuesday, District Attorney Andrew Womble cited a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation probe and concluded that the deputies who fatally shot Andrew Brown Jr. last month were justified in using deadly force.

Womble said the shooting, “while tragic, was justified because Mr. Brown’s actions caused three deputies to reasonably believe it was necessary to use deadly force to protect themselves and others,” CNN quotes.

As we previously reported, Brown, a Black man who was just 42-years-old, was fatally shot by Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies in Elizabeth City on April 21 when they attempted to serve him with an arrest warrant, according to the sheriff’s office. The North Carolina prosecutor who is overseeing the fatal police shooting claimed that he hit officers with his vehicle. However, his family members were the only ones who were allowed to see the footage and said the bodycam clip showed that he did NOT strike deputies with his vehicle OR even drive in their direction. They also noted that he was not armed. The killing led to protests in Elizabeth City against police violence and the authorities’ lack of transparency.

BREAKING UPDATE: The Andrew Brown Jr. police shooting video has just been released to the public and the D.A. said no charges would be filed against the officers.
