A California deputy was captured on camera burglarizing an Orange County home after responding to a call about a man who died there.

12-year Orange County Sheriff’s Office veteran Steve Hortz was arrested and jailed Thursday for burglarizing the home of a deceased homeowner in July. He responded to a call about a man in his 70s who died of natural causes on July 20 and security footage showed Hortz returning to the home on three separate occasions in late July and mid-August to unlocked the doors then remove several items while in uniform.
Officials also reported that the deceased homeowner’s attorney contacted the sheriff’s department to report several items missing from the home and provided footage as evidence. Hortz removed two safes, ceiling fans, a rifle case, and other items that were not disclosed as reported by NBC News.

Hortz was also placed on administrative leave amid his arrest and burglary charge.
