Legendary actor Denzel Washington gives a refreshing take on cancel culture, claiming he “could care less” about it, insisting: “You can’t be cancelled if you haven’t signed up” and “I follow God, I don’t follow man.”
Denzel Washington recently shared his thoughts on cancel culture in a recent sit-down with Complex News’s Jillian Hardeman-Webb.
During the interview, he sat alongside legendary director and writer Spike Lee, who directs Washington’s latest film, ‘Highest 2 Lowest.’ When asked about his thoughts on cancel culture, he asked, “What does that mean, ‘being cancelled?’”

Hardemann-Webb swiftly summarized, “It means you lose public support.” Washington upped, “Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?” Hardemann-Webb replied, “I guess because followers now are currency.” While mentioning his faith in God, Denzel Washington said:
“I don’t care who’s following who. Okay? You can’t lead and follow at the same time. And you can’t follow and lead at the same time. I don’t follow anybody. I follow the Heavenly Spirit. I follow God. I don’t follow man. I have FAITH in God. I have HOPE in man, but look around. It ain’t working out so well. Forget being followed. You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”
Washington then joked, “Don’t get me started. My chest starting to hurt. You know, my chest is getting tight talking about it. I could care LESS.”

Denzel Washington’s comments on cancel culture arrives after he previously expressed how he’s unaffected by public opinion. In a recent conversation with journalist Jake Hamilton on ‘Jake’s Takes,’ the Oscar winner shared he, again, could care less about winning Academy Awards, aka Oscars. He said:
“I don’t do it for the Oscars. I really don’t care about that kind of stuff. I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s times when I’ve won, shouldn’t have won, didn’t win, should have won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I’m not that interested in the Oscars. You know, people will ask me, ‘Well, where do you keep it?’ I say, ‘Next to the other one.’ I’m not bragging. I’m just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, it ain’t gon’ do me a bit of good.”
