Demi Lovato recently opened up about their experience of coming out to their parents and the public. At 25 years old, Lovato, who uses they/them and she/her pronouns, made the decision to reveal their true self to their loved ones. Initially identifying as bisexual, Lovato later realized that they identified as pansexual. Their Christian background made them hesitant to come out, but they found a way to subtly express their sexuality through their music. Interestingly, Lovato’s stepdad had already known about their sexuality because of the lyrics in their hit song “Cool for the Summer,” they said in an interview on Sirius XM.
When Lovato finally came out to their mom before deciding to go on a date with a woman, she was incredibly supportive. This support from their parents was crucial for Lovato as they motivate and encourage her fans to fully embrace their own sexuality. Lovato has identified as queer, pansexual, sexually fluid, and non-binary. They currently use both she/her and they/them pronouns, highlighting the fluidity and complexity of gender identity.
Further in the interview, Lovato shared the details of their journey towards coming out to their parents. They admitted that it took them until the age of 25 to gather the courage to have that conversation. This suggests that Lovato’s stepfather was more perceptive and understanding than they had initially realized.
“It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom. At the time I was bisexual and then I realized I was pansexual. It took me a while,” they said, adding that she “came from a Christian background and grew up queer and didn’t tell people until I felt comfortable with it.” Lovato also remembered coming out to her mother, saying she “just almost started crying and was like, ‘I just want you to be happy.’ And to have that reaction from a parent is so valuable and so appreciated because there are so many parents that don’t respond that way and it breaks my heart.”
It is heartwarming to see this level of acceptance within their family.
Lovato also acknowledged that not all parents respond positively when their children come out. They emphasized the importance of having supportive parents and expressed gratitude for their own experiences. Lovato recognizes that many individuals do not have the same level of support and understanding from their families, which can be incredibly challenging. By sharing their story, Lovato hopes to inspire others to be true to themselves and to find a support system that accepts them for who they are.

The journey of self-discovery and coming out is unique for each individual, and Lovato’s story is a testament to that. Coming out is a deeply personal and often emotional process, and it’s essential for individuals to feel safe and supported throughout it. Lovato’s story serves as a reminder that no matter how long it takes or what challenges may arise, embracing one’s true self is worth it in the end.
