Deion Sanders is officially back, and he is making sure the world knows he is entering the upcoming college football season with great energy, and good health.

The Colorado Buffaloes head coach revealed on Good Morning America that he is cancer-free following a quiet but incredibly grueling battle with an aggressive form of bladder cancer. Heading into his fourth year leading the program in Boulder, Sanders is framing his recovery as a total restoration of the energy that has defined his legendary sports career.

“Last year at this time, I was fighting cancer, didn’t know which way it was going to go,” Sanders admitted on GMA. “I’m fully back now. Last year at this time, it wasn’t a good look.” He continued, “We fought the battle and we won the battle fighting cancer,” Sanders shared. “I’m cancer-free. I’m good. Great doctors in Colorado that have brought me through. God has brought me through. I’m thankful I’m healthy.”

More On His Health Journey:

The health crisis quietly unfolded behind the scenes during a chaotic period of transition for Colorado football. While the sports world was locked in on the team’s on-field performance, and the high-profile departures of foundational stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to the NFL—Coach Prime was privately managing an intense medical regimen.

The diagnosis originally came about by accident during a routine vascular checkup meant to monitor his ongoing issues with blood clots. Doctors caught the cancer just as it was reaching the muscular wall of his bladder, prompting an aggressive treatment plan that ultimately required a full robotic-assisted bladder removal and reconstruction using part of his intestine.

The physical toll of the procedure was immense, adding to a medical history that already included 14 surgeries and the amputation of two toes during his tenure at Jackson State. Sanders chose to be completely transparent about the painful and often humbling realities of his recovery, including temporary incontinence and the steep learning curve of adapting to a reconstructed bladder.

More On His Recovery:

Sanders credited his survival to early medical intervention and a deep reliance on his faith, giving praise to his team of specialists at UCHealth for navigating him through the worst of the illness. Because the cancer was discovered early due to his existing medical screenings, the Hall of Famer is now using his massive platform to urge other men to look past any embarrassment and prioritize routine health checks.

With his medical battles now in the rearview mirror, Sanders is turning his full attention back to rewriting the narrative around Colorado football.

“I’ve got my health back. I’ve got my swagger back… I’m ready to go coach my butt off this season. I’m having a good time,” Sanders said.
