As we previously shared via the New York City Police Department on Thursday (April 10), a helicopter crashed around 3:15 p.m. EST into the Hudson River off NYC. Hoboken Fire Department officials confirmed the crash happened on the New Jersey side of the Hudson, specifically off the coast of River Drive, just over 15 minutes after it departed from the Wall Street Heliport.
Officials said the helicopter reached the George Washington Bridge around 3:08 p.m. before turning south along the New Jersey shoreline and crashing. The chopper, identified by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Bell 206 helicopter, was on its sixth flight of the day. Authorities found the helicopter upside-down in the 50-degree water when rescuers arrived at the scene.
At the time of the crash, authorities said all six people on board the craft, including the pilot, died. However, they did not share key details as to what caused the crash or who the victims were. Reports soon emerged revealing that the passengers aboard were a family of five from Spain.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference and said:
“Three adults and three children were on board a failed 206 helicopter that had left from the downtown SkyPort just about 3 p.m. The pilot, and the family visiting from Spain, without preliminary information. Members of the FDNY and NYPD harbor units arrived at the scene, and divers from both agencies entered the water. At this time, all six victims have been removed from the water. And sadly, all six victims have been pronounced deceased. Our hearts go out to the family and those on board.”
