Music legend and serial entrepreneur Damon “Dame” Dash is going viral after recently introducing his protégée Nicky Licky as a “White lesbian” version of the late and great singer Aaliyah.
During a recent interview with ‘The Art of Dialogue,’ published on August 6, Dash talked about his new music ventures, oral health, and more. Dash talked about his new album “365,” performed by his new Rock band The Black Guns.
The Alternative Rap group, lead by Philadelphia rapper and one-time Roc-A-Fella signee Freeway, features Dame Dash, guitarist Tash Neal, drummer Ali Warren, and Dash’s protégée Nicky Licky.
While speaking about the group’s new song “Recession Proof,” Dash talked about him singing and playing instruments. He said, “I think people should listen to it. I’m singing. I’m out of my comfort zone and I’m very vulnerable. Like, if anything, you could have a video of me singing and meme that up and laugh at it, if it’s bad.”
He continued, “But, if it’s not bad, I would think the reason why people aren’t talking about it is because it’s too good. That’s what I think. They know how good it is that they can’t even call it bad. If people be like, ‘Oh, this is supposed to be bad,’ and they see it, they’ll be like, ‘Nah, I don’t. This sh*t is good.’”
As he tried to recall other details, he called into frame his artist and protégée Nicky Licky, formerly known as her first name Nicolette. He said, “Nicolette’s on it too. She has her own solo albums as well. But, she’s a big part of ‘Freeway x The Black Guns.’”
Dash went on to describe her and compared her to his late girlfriend, singer Aaliyah. He said, “It’s funny ‘cause… It’s like, to me, she’s like if Aaliyah was White. If Aaliyah was White, she’d be a lesbian. That’s her. And she has the same everything. She has a little bit of rhythm too. And she can play instruments, she writes and sings. She also did a lot of administrative stuff with the album. She helped build my—she helped me with my dream. And she earned her way into the band, by working with the band.”
