After Da Brat and her wife Jesseca Dupart (aka “Judy”) admitted that they chose a white sperm donor for IVF over their one and only qualifying Black donor, who looked like “Jiminy Cricket,” the couple caught tons of backlash, and now Judy is blasting back at critics.
On Tuesday (May 2), we shared that Da Brat and wife Jesseca Dupart sat down with The Root and opened up about their journey to parenthood. The couple explained how they chose a white sperm donor over a Black donor, because there was only one Black candidate, and he wasn’t attractive enough.
The couple revealed that they were quite surprised at how few Black donors there were to choose from. They started with a few thousand candidates and would go on to rule out hundreds “based on things revealed in Judy’s genetic screening.”
After that, they were only left with about 300 candidates, and only one of them was Black. However, their one and only wasn’t attractive enough for them. Brat laughingly said, “That [dude] looked like Jiminy Cricket. I was like, ‘I’m sorry, but that wasn’t gonna be my choice.’”
Being that there were only white donors left to choose form, they ultimately picked one. Brat said, “Because we didn’t have a lot to choose from, he definitely wasn’t Black. But I think we did a great job with picking. He’s handsome, he’s tall and I think he’s going to look beautiful with my wife’s egg.”

Following the news of their confession, and Brat’s “Jiminy Cricket” comment, the couple caught serious backlash from critics claiming they wanted a biracial baby, amongst other insensitive things. Judy ended up speaking out in the comment section of Baller Alert‘s Instagram.
She fired back, “TO BE CLEAR – for all those that are not aware of the MANY things we weren’t aware of, here it is: black men make up less than 5% of the donation pool. Furthermore with genetic testing ( that is SPECIFICALLY for looking into the diseases that humans carry ) and inputting my stats in ALL of the cryo banks -it went from THOUSANDS to about 300 and of that only 1 was black – and he also unfortunately wasn’t a perfect match.”
Judy added, “So we actually waited a few weeks to see if the pool increased – but unfortunately with the time frame we had to choose within 6-8 weeks and there was no more new black donors that fit within the perfect fit with my genetic testing. Hopefully this HEADLINE that people are running with will EDUCATE more people that there’s a HUGE gap in the sperm pool. Everyone have a great rest of your day.”

Since taking to the outlet’s comment section, she hopped on her own Instagram page to continue blasting critics who were misinformed and insensitive. She posted several videos and some receipts of her own, and also addressed Brat’s “Jiminy Cricket joke.”
She also sent up a lengthy caption. It read: “So , as a mother of 3 beautiful black kids , and even a black grand baby I want to CLARIFY SH*T to avoid this STORYLINE from continuing that we choose our donor off of looks and that we didn’t want a black donor. Here’s some things you should know:
1) WE HAD NO IDEA GOING INTO THIS THAT our chances of a black donor would be slim to none. 2) that I was a carrier of so many disorders. 3) that our window was SOOOO slim and such high risk cus of age and more.
4) With my genetic testing I’m the carrier of 4 disorders, that reduced our chances of a black donor down to 1 person and that 1 person had very limited info / portfolio to judge on ….. including BACKGROUND.”

Judy continued, “5) I’m honestly disappointed more than anything at the storyline , but do understand the lack of knowledge on IVF in our community cus a lot of people don’t even realize all the things when it comes with the journey including LACK OF BLACK DONORS, genetic testing, age where most your eggs are gone , etc.
6) The headlines are misleading but also my wife made a distasteful joke and now it’s attached to the headline and making it seem like we choose strictly off of looks and we didn’t at all attempt to find a black donor when in fact not only did we try but we also waited to see if more would pop up over time – but had to stay within the window that we had to choose. Furthermore people think just cus u have money that ANYTHING is possible but no amount of money was changing the cryobanks inventory.
7) Our baby created with a HEALTHY baby first mindset once we learned all the things, was a hard decision and of course we didn’t want to add any other stigmas or anything to our child but we had SEVERELY limited options. Thanks to all the people supporting us on our journey and I truly hope this brings awareness to more black men to donate.”
