At first, Xavier Young and his fiancee Marjorie Alston were not planning to attend the protest in Raleigh because of her pregnancy and Young had prior commitments. However, Young canceled his plans and the couple decided to march alongside their fellow protestors. During an interview with E!, Young said he packed his bag with essentials such as water, snacks, and the ring he picked out for Marjorie. When the moment arrived, he pulled out the ring from his bag and photographer Charles Crouch of 4C Visuals Group captured the touching moment as noted in an Instagram post:

“Went downtown to the protest against police brutality. I was blessed to capture this proposal in the midst of what would become chaos.”
