Reddit user Beckpatton uploaded the image of a personalized drink koozie with the caption “This couple thought the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 was a great theme for their wedding.” On the novelty item, it shows a picture of the World Trade Center in a heart with the quote “Never Forget 9. 11. 21” and the couple’s names are crossed out. One user commented “Some wedding venues offer discounted rates on this date, for the obvious reason. I don’t think getting married on 9/11 is inherently insensitive, but making your wedding 9/11 themed definitely is.”

Another user said they saw another couple taking engagement photos near the memorial site in New York City. “Was out to watch/shoot the memorial lights go up and there were several engagement/ wedding photos going around. Like I completely understand that these would normally be great spots for photos as they are very scenic in Brooklyn, however today was not the day to do it. Plus there was about 100 photographers there already set up for hours and you come in and just mess up their shots,” they wrote.

A user who said they were a firefighter supported the idea but noted that some people may have pulled the stunt before. “Well nothing is off-limits, but no reaction is off-limits either. While i support the freedom of their decision, I also support our decision to collectively call it out as a bad one. And i hope at least one person in their lives tried to do the same beforehand. As a 20yr medic and a 14yr fireman, I just shake my head at this one,” he wrote.

The wedding was discussed in the subreddit group called r/trashy where the forum discusses all things trashy which includes “people, things, media, etc. that boldly and shamelessly violates social conventions and cultural norms. Satisfy our voyeuristic drives by sharing trashy images, videos, stories, and fashion. All forms of trash are eagerly welcomed.”
