#Socialites, are you here for it? As of Friday (October 3), Costco members are now able to purchase weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy at a huge discount at the chain’s 600+ pharmacies across the United States.
On Friday (October 3), Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical firm that makes the semaglutide weight-loss injection drugs, made the announcement. Costco will now sell the weight-loss medications at half-price for consumers. Novo Nordisk said Costco members will be able to grab a four-week (or one-month) supply of the drugs for $499 out-of-pocket.
This is the same price on Novo Nordisk’s direct-to-consumer website. It also has the same price tag at retailers like CVS and Walmart. However, Novo Nordisk states that consumers will still need a doctor’s prescription before ordering the drugs at the warehouse chain’s pharmacies.
Novo Nordisk President Speaks On Company Selling Discounted Ozempic And Wegovy At Costco
Ozempic and Wegovy usually retail for about $1,300 and $1,600, respectively. These prices are according to GoodRx, which compares drug prices from different pharmacies and other medical providers.
Now, according to a Novo Nordisk spokesperson who spoke with CBS News, Costco executive members and Costco Citibank Visa cardholders will also receive an additional 2% discount on Ozempic and Wegovy.
Dave Moore — who is the President of Novo Nordisk Inc. and Executive Vice President for Novo Nordisk’s U.S. Operations — said, “Our collaboration with Costco is another step forward by Novo Nordisk in making real Wegovy® and Ozempic easier to access and afford — right where people already shop.”
Moore continued to tell NBC News, “We want to make sure we offer the real, authentic Wegovy and Ozempic where patients seek care. We know that Costco is a trusted brand.”
More On Ozempic And Wegovy Medications And FDA Statements
The two medications are semaglutide weight-loss injection drugs that suppress patients’ appetites, helping them lose weight. Ozempic, which was first designed for adults with Type 2 diabetes and to help lower blood sugar, has also been shown to reduce heart and kidney problems.
Now, unlike Ozempic, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved Wegovy for weight loss last year. The agency also said certain patients can take the drug to reduce the risk of heart attacks and heart strokes.
