Cory Booker has broken the record the longest speech given by a U.S. Senator as he slams President Donald Trump over American history, Trump’s ‘Disneyfication’ and White-washing, Trump’s policies and high prices, and more for over 25 hours — 25 hours and 5 minutes to be exact! The previous record was held by Strom Thurmond at 24 house and 18 minutes.

On Tuesday (April 1), Cory Booker, a Democratic Senator from New Jersey, surpassed 24 hours of speaking on the Senate floor. Booker took to the floor at 7 p.m. EST on Monday (March 31) in an attempt to disrupt the normal business of the Senate. He did so in protest of the “grave and urgent” danger of Donald Trump’s presidential administration.
As Booker approached a full day of speaking, he began to slightly stumble on his speech. However, he remained on his feet and pushed through. Leading up to the 24-hour mark, Booker evoked the Founding Fathers, Civil Rights leaders, and lawmakers who have stood up for all Americans in the nation’s history.

Booker also called for lawmakers to join him in standing up against Donald Trump and his administration, and to hold them accountable their actions. During his filibuster, Booker would yield to questions — like one from Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy. As he crossed the record-breaking line, Booker yielded to Murphy, while retaining the floor, and rested.
As he did so, Murphy congratulated him, with the other members in the room, for having the longest speech in Senate history. He beat the 1957 record set by Republican South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond who filibustered the Civil Rights Act. Murphy said:
“What you have done here today Senator Booker couldn’t be more different than what occurred on this floor in 1957. Strom Thurmond was standing in the way of inevitable progress. Today, you are standing in the way not of progress but of retreat.”
