Corrections Officers In Danger After Philadelphia Man Is Gunned Down Outside Prison After Release

On Monday morning (Mar. 22), a local union representing corrections officers in Philadelphia’s prisons department spoke out days after a Philadelphia man was gunned down outside the prison, less than an hour after his release.

The union, known as District Council 33’s Local 159, reported that at least one corrections officer has received a death threat and countless others believe their lives are in jeopardy after 20-year-old Rodney Hargrove was shot and killed outside Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility last Thursday (Mar. 18).

Last week’s incident occurred as Hargrove was dropped off at a SEPTA bus stop after his prison release. He was then pursued by a dark vehicle, prompting him to run back onto prison property as the security arm at the entrance was left open. The vehicle drove onto prison grounds and the occupants fatally shot Hargrove. Subsequent to the shooting, officers guarding the gate have now been given bulletproof vests. However, they are still fearful and understaffed.

Local 159 has since called for Prisons Commissioner Blanche Carney to resign and refrain from making any statements about the shooting until the investigation is complete. However, Carney’s office released a statement that he doesn’t plan to resign and won’t comment further.
