Congress Mandates New Anti-Drunk Driving Tech For Cars

Following multiple tragedies caused by drunk driving, Congress is putting in place a mandate that requires all vehicles to have a system in place that will prevent drivers from getting behind the wheel drunk.

The new mandate will require cars to be equipped with technology to stop drunk people from driving. The mandate comes as a part of congress’ new infrastructure to prevent drunk crash-related deaths.

“This technology will essentially eliminate drunken driving,” said Alex Otte, president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

The $1.2 trillion infrastructure was passed by Congress last week and is on its way to President Joe Biden to be signed. The 2,700-page legislation is a mandate that requires all new cars to be fitted with monitors aimed at detecting whether a driver is impaired and to shut down the vehicle if any  unusual activity is detected.

Per the Associated Press, the mandate requires “monitoring systems to stop intoxicated drivers would roll out in all new vehicles as early as 2026, after the Transportation Department assesses the best form of technology to install in millions of vehicles and automakers are given time to comply.”
