Clothing Company Shein Explains Viral Phone Case After Major Backlash

Popular clothing company Shein is trending again and not because of their affordable trendy clothes. Instead, over a strange phone case that many customers called “inappropriate” and “disrespectful.”

The phone case in question shows artwork of a Black man on the ground while his hands are cuffed to his back. The case also features an arm of what appears to be a white police officer, outlining the Black man’s body with chalk. The item that was titled “Figure Graphic Phone Case” was only listed for $1.50.

Following massive backlash online, the company is now explaining the meaning behind the case: “We would like to explain to Hollywood Unlocked and followers that the piece of art displayed on the phone case was created to raise awareness for the 2014 murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO in support of Black Lives Matter… We understand the artwork has been interpreted as offensive and racist, however, its meaning is quite the contrary. For those who are offended we would like to apologize and out of respect for the community we have since removed the case from our site.”

As we previously reported, on August 9, 2014, Michael Brown Jr., an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by 28-year-old white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Protests and riots ensue in Ferguson and soon spread across the country. Prosecutors in the US city of St Louis have said they will not bring charges against a former police officer following a reinvestigation.
