Actress Christina Applegate is further opening up about her multiple sclerosis diagnosis and how it is affecting her career. The ‘Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead’ actress reveals that she “probably won’t work on camera again,” and “it f***ing sucks.”
Christina Applegate Reveals She ‘Probably Won’t Work On Camera Again’ Following 2021 Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis: ‘It F***ing Sucks’
Back in August 2021, Christina Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis — a debilitating disease that attacks the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, optic nerves). At the time, she was filming the third and final season of Netflix’s ‘Dead To Me’ — which went on to debut in November 2022.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the ‘Married with Children’ alum says she doesn’t see herself returning to TV and film due to the impact the disabling neurological disease has been having on her body, and subsequently her career.

On Thursday (May 4), the 51-year-old actress shared that she has no plans to return to the screen, admitting, “I’m probably not going to work on-camera again.”
Applegate continued to praise the experience she had while working with Linda Cardellini on ‘Dead To Me.’ She added, “Ping-pong is so much more fun when the other person is just as good as you are … I’m so glad that I went out with someone who is by far the greatest actress I’ve ever worked with in my entire life, if not the greatest human I’ve ever known.”

When Applegate first received her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in August 2021, filming on the Netflix show had come to a halt so that she could begin her treatment.
When the ‘Dead To Me’ series wrapped production, Applegate spoke with Variety in November 2022, and she opened up about the future of her career then as well.

At the time, Applegate revealed that things were really hard for her as she continued to wrap the Netflix series. She said that her symptoms popping up during filming was “as hard as you would possibly think it would be.”
She added, “It’s about finding what I’m capable of doing. I’m so new in this right now. It takes time to kind of figure out this disease, and figure out what’s bringing on symptoms. I’m just a newbie to all of this. So I’m trying to figure it out — and I’m also in mourning for the person who I was. I have to find a place that’s as loving as my set was, where they won’t think I’m a diva by saying, ‘Hey, I can only work five hours.’”
Applegate continued to explain that she had been seeking “a place that will allow me to [work five hours] if I’m not the star.” She also came to the realization that taking on another acting gig might just be something that wouldn’t happen in the near future. She admitted, “There’s no way I could do the work that I just came off again. I mean, it was so hard.”
In her new interview with Vanity Fair last week, Applegate shared the same sentiments as she did last year with Variety. She now said, “I can’t even imagine going to set right now. This is a progressive disease. I don’t know if I’m going to get worse. I can do voiceover stuff because I have to support my family and keep my brain working.”
However, she said she is still hopeful to maybe work in the business in other ways. She explored, “Who knows — I’m probably gonna get real bored of being in my room. I’d like to develop stuff, I’d like to produce stuff. I’ve got a lot of ideas in my mind, and I just need to get them executed.”
