China Proposes Educating Boys On ‘Masculinity’ Amid Changing Gender Roles
In their effort to make boys more “manly” and decrease effeminacy, China proposes extra physical education classes and educating its boys on “masculinity” amid the advanced change of traditional gender roles — which the state claims “threatens China’s survival and development.”
China’s education ministry is making headlines after suggesting young Chinese men have become too “feminine,” blaming China’s male celebrities and their influence. With their Proposal to Prevent the Feminization of Male Adolescents, the ministry calls on schools to fully reform their curriculums on physical education and to better screen their teachers. They suggest recruiting retired athletes and those with sporting backgrounds to “cultivate students’ masculinity.”

Regarding the change of traditional gender roles, officials say since 2010, they’ve seen more girls than boys enroll in universities; with girls regularly outperforming boys in standardized testing. Subsequently, they feel this calls into question the traditional view that boys are naturally more academic. Aside from this “research,” officials are blaming the growing popularity of male Chinese pop stars, who wear makeup and dress in sparkly and androgynous clothing.
Further combatting their issue, in 2019, the Chinese government began blurring earrings and colored hair on male celebrities, and deleted scenes depicting homosexuality from the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Despite all of this, same-sex marriage is still making headway, and the first same-sex kiss of the ‘Star Wars‘ franchise made it into Chinese theaters.
