China Announces No New Local Coronavirus Cases For The First Time Since Outbreak Started

While countries around the world have started barricading their national borders by imposing quarantines, increasing travel restrictions and more to tackle the fast-spreading pandemic, China has just announced no new domestic coronavirus infections for the first time since the outbreak surfaced.

According to CNN, the announcement was made by China’s National Health Commission during a news conference on Thursday. Apparently, Wuhan, the capital of the central Chinese province of Hubei, reported no new cases in the last 24 hours, showing that the country’s strict containment measures have been effective in decreasing the number of cases.

“Today, we have seen the dawn after so many days of hard effort,” said Jiao Yahui, a senior inspector at the National Health Commission, The Associated Press reported

It was noted that results over the past 24 hours only showed 34 new cases in all of mainland China, officials said Thursday, meaning they were already infected before arriving in the country. As we previously reported, the global number of confirmed coronavirus infections passed 218,000, including around 9,000 deaths. Meanwhile, over 84,100 people have recovered from infection so far, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.

As CBS News reports, while the country’s health ministry did not report any new cases, it recorded eight new deaths. China has reported a total of 80,928 confirmed coronavirus cases with abut 3,245 deaths. The news site notes that another 70,420 people have been released from hospitals and 7,263 remain in treatment.
