Authorities are still on the hunt for the man who carried out the shooting attack on UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Wednesday morning. However, surveillance stills have surfaced showing the moments leading up to the murder outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan.

The images released by authorities reveal the unidentified suspect, armed with a handgun fitted with a silencer, lurking just moments before the fatal confrontation. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny detailed the harrowing scene, stating that the shooter arrived at the location roughly five minutes before the incident and fired a shot at Thompson’s back. “The shooter walks toward the victim and continues to shoot. It appears that the gun malfunctions as he clears the jam and begins to fire again.”

Adding to the chilling situation, Paulette Thompson, Brian’s wife, disclosed that her husband had been the target of threats prior to his death. “There had been some threats,” she revealed in a phone call to NBC News. “Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”

According to police reports, Thompson suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was immediately rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Thompson, who was 50, had been at the helm of UnitedHealth Group—the largest private health insurer in the U.S.—since 2021, after a two-decade-long career with the company. Ironically, he was set to attend an investor day event this Wednesday.

“The motive for this murder is currently unknown but based on the evidence we have so far, it does appear the victim was specifically targeted,” Kenny stated during a press briefing. “But at this point, we do not know why.”

With a robust background, Thompson had joined UnitedHealth in April 2004 after spending nearly seven years at PwC. He earned his stripes as a respected leader in the health insurance sector, holding a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Iowa.

As of now, the hunt for the assailant continues, with no arrests made and the investigation still very much active.

UnitedHealthcare has since released a statement on Brian Thompson’s death: “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
