Last June, John Matthews,25, killed his girlfriend, Shonta Harris, her mother Francis Neal, and sister Jasmine Neal during an argument. The murders occurred after Harris refused to serve Matthews breakfast and braid his hair because she wasn’t feeling well. The young man went into a rampage and punched her in the eye after he yelled at her. Their then four-month-old son was in the home at the time.
After Harris called her mother and sister for help, Matthews refused to let the women into his home and started arguing outside. During the verbal altercation, Matthews pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Francis seven times and Harris once in the chest. Prosecutors stated Jasmine ran into the street and screamed for help but Matthews shot her in the head.
His grandmother contacted 911 and told police about the shooting and identified Matthews. Harris told police about the abuse she endured while dating Matthews and died three months later on September 5.

Police ruled her death as a homicide and Matthews fled to Iowa shortly after committing the murders. He was caught after being involved in a car accident back in August and was extradited back to Illinois earlier this week.
On Friday, Judge Charles Beach II said Matthews will be held without bail on three counts of first-degree murder. Prior to the shooting, Matthews had no criminal record and worked for Amazon.
