Chicago Experiences Deadliest Memorial Day Weekend With 36 Shot, 9 Killed

Per the Chicago Tribune, Chicago has already experienced its deadliest Memorial Day weekend since 2015, as it reports 36 people shot and nine people killed from Friday morning to Monday morning.

While there’s still a day left in the holiday weekend, the number of shootings quickly nears and surpasses totals for 2019 (43 shot, seven dead), despite the coronavirus stay-at-home order enacted.

On Friday, Police Superintendent David Brown said he expected a spike in violence this weekend and made sure he had officers step up patrol. However, on Saturday, authorities totaled 17 people shot and five dead, with the youngest non-fatal victim at 15 years old and youngest fatal at 16. On Sunday, ten people were shot, with three fatalities.

Furthermore, the shootings arrived as the city’s law enforcement enacts its anti-violence measures via its initiative, “Summer Operation Center.” The center allows officers to react to in-real-time to shooting threats via a network of gunshot detectors and cameras.
