OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will be entering its erotica era in December, soon allowing age-verified adult users to engage in erotic interactions with the AI (Artificial Intelligence) platform.

On Tuesday (October 14), Altman wrote on X that the company is adopting a new policy of “treating adult users like adults.” He said that as part of this new principle, ChatGPT will allow age-gated “erotica” for verified adult users in December.

Altman also addressed his and OpenAI’s previous hesitancy around the sexually explicit use of AI. He said OpenAI developers previously made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues.”

However, he added, “Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.” His full tweet read:

“We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Previously Talked About Banning Erotic AI Content On ChatGPT While Seemingly Shading Elon Musk’s Foray Into Adult AI Content

Altman himself has also been weary of allowing erotic content at OpenAI and ChatGPT. Two months ago, he told video journalist Cleo Abram that there were several opportunities to “juice growth and revenue,” but they didn’t naturally align with OpenAI’s values. Abrams then asked for an example. Altman replied, “We haven’t put a sex-bot avatar in ChatGPT yet.” Abram said, “It does seem like it would get time spent.” Altman replied, “Apparently, it does.”

It’s speculated that Altman was referring to X CEO Elon Musk. While Altman, OpenAI, and ChatGPT were busy barring sexual conversations, OpenAI’s competitors owned and ran by Musk were jumping into erotica. In June, Musk’s xAI released Ani, a lingerie-wearing anime girl companion. The AI-generated woman even has users falling in love with her.

Additionally, the AI component on X, known as Grok, jumped into erotica as well. Grok Imagine, xAI’s video generator, also launched a “spicy” mode. This goes as far as allowing users to disrobe images of people.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Responds To X Users Reacting To ChatGPT’s Upcoming Erotic Adult AI Content

Responding to Altman’s tweet, one X user wrote, “About time… ChatGPT used to feel like a person you could actually talk to, then it turned into a compliance bot. If it can be made fun again without losing the guardrails, that’s a huge win. People don’t want chaos, just authenticity.” Altman replied:

“For sure; we want that too. Almost all users can use ChatGPT. however they’d like without negative effects; for a very small percentage of users in mentally fragile states there can be serious problems.

0.1% of a billion users is still a million people. We needed (and will continue to need) to learn how to protect those users, and then with enhanced tools for that, adults that are not at risk of serious harm (mental health breakdowns, suicide, etc) should have a great deal of freedom in how they use ChatGPT.”

Another person countered, “Why do age-gates always have to lead to erotica? Like, I just want to be able to be treated like an adult and not a toddler, that doesn’t mean I want perv-mode activated.” Altman simply replied, “You won’t get it unless you ask for it.” The X user quipped, “That’s what he said.”
