In a new interview with Fox 5, legendary singer-songwriter Chaka Khan talks about her latest song, titled “Woman Like Me,” which is her first single on SRG-ILS Group. It was produced by Gregg Pagani, who also co-wrote it with Francesca Richard and Jeffrey Anderson.
The new track is an empowering, edgy song where she sings the lyrics, “She’s more than her body / More than her ass in some jeans, let’s be clear / More than her makeup / More than the lace front that she chose to wear,” she sings. “She is your sister / She is your mother, your daughter, your girl / Better remember / It was the one that brought you into this world.” So far, “Woman Like Me” is the most-added song on R&B radio and has secured 23 stations in its release week.
During her interview, she talked more about her great music and even looked back on her hit song, Through The Fire which has been borrowed by other great artists like Kanye West. However, the songstress admitted that she’s still not too happy about him sampling her song for his hit, “Through The Wire.”
Khan was asked if she has since heard from West after voicing her disapproval all these years later. She said no and she doesn’t plan to hear from him. “I’m not looking to hear from Kanye, either,” said Khan. “No, I’ve not heard from him and I’m not looking to hear from him. That’s what he did. That’s what he did with his music. I was upset about sounding like a chipmunk, ’cause he didn’t put that when he asked [if] he could use my, sample my song. He didn’t mention that he was gonna speed it up three times its normal speed.”

Khan went on to say that had West told her of his plans, she may have rejected his request. Because of West, the singer added that she now has people specify exactly how they intend to use her music. She previously called West’s sample “insulting” and “stupid.”
“Through the Wire” was the debut single by Ye, who wrote and recorded the song with his jaw wired shut after a car accident in October 2002. Speaking to MTV several months after the crash, West reflected: “My jaw was broken in three places. I had nasal fractures. I’d be talking to people and my nose would start bleeding.
“Even to this day, I could start choking because spit will go down the wrong path. That whole area is messed up. But right now I’m healing, I’m just learning how to pronounce words like, ‘What’s up’ with the ‘t’ and the ‘s’ together without it being slurred, so I can rap again.”
Ye has referred to the car crash in several of his songs. In the recent track, Eazy which was released on January 15, 2022, Yeezy raps: “God saved me from that crash” most likely referencing the 2002 near-fatal car incident.
