Chadwick Boseman’s Mother Reportedly Inspired Him to Keep Painful Cancer Battle Private
The beloved Chadwick Boseman was in the spotlight for portraying some of our favorite roles, but he was very private when it came to his personal life.
Boseman’s longtime agent, Michael Greene spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about why the late actor chose to keep his painful cancer battle private. A decision that was partly inspired by his mother Carolyn.
“She always taught him not to have people fuss over him,” said Greene. “He always felt in this business that people trip out about things, and he was a very, very private person,” the agent added.
Greene adds that Boseman would quietly struggle on set at times. For example, with his upcoming Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, “he was really in hard-core pain” but “felt that being able to be with [co-star] Denzel [Washington] and to launch this cycle of [playwright] August Wilson at Netflix was so exciting to him.”

Boseman was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016, which progressed to stage 4, leading to his passing on Aug. 28. He gave us multiple legendary movies in that time, not shedding any light into what he was battling on a daily basis. Even Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler and Da 5 Bloods director Spike Lee report that they didn’t know about his cancer battle.
The actor will be dearly missed.
