ATLANTA - MAY 9: Traffic crawls through downtown Atlanta along Interstate 75/85 during rush hour May 9, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. According to a new study Atlanta, like many other cities nationwide, is losing its fight against traffic gridlock. The Texas Transportation Institute ranks Atlanta fourth behind Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., for delays per traveler on its roads. Last year, Atlanta was ranked fifth in the study. CDC Study Finds That Over 80% Of Coronavirus Patients In Georgia Were African-American

While Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has ordered that Georgia reopen with the likes of nail salons, barbershops and other businesses, a CDC study shows that a disproportionate amount of COVID-19 victims in Georgia were black.

While examining date from eight different Georgia hospitals, researchers discovered that out of 305 COVID-19 patients, 247 were black, which is over 80%. In comparison, 32 patients (10.8%) were white, 10 (3.4%) were Hispanic and eight (2.7%) were Asian or Pacific Islander.

“The proportion of hospitalized patients who were black was higher than expected based on overall hospital admissions,” the study says.

“It is important to continue ongoing efforts to understand the reasons for these racial disparities, including the role of socioeconomic and occupational factors in transmission,” the researchers noted. “Public officials should consider racial differences among patients affected by COVID-19 when planning prevention activities.”

Kemp did not not taking any advice from health professionals when he made the decision to reopen, infuriating many prominent black leaders who show concern that the black community will be the most affected.

“We call upon our local political leaders to continue to work on behalf of all Georgia citizens, and especially its most vulnerable citizens who need and deserve reparative outreach and service,” the state’s NAACP said in a statement.

Per CBS, the study urges people to take into consideration that certain racial groups are hit harder by the virus, and to remain indoors.
