Cat Undergoes ‘Sex Change’ Operation Due To Urinary Issues

A North Carolina woman says her cat is now “transgender” after he underwent an operation to resolve his urinary issues.

According to the Daily Mail, Krista Lee said her beloved 1-year-old moggy named Lewis was having trouble releasing his urine and assumed he had an infection when he tried to pee but had blood in his urine. Lewis’ veterinarian told Lee and her husband Sean that a skin flap around his penis was preventing him from releasing urine properly. Two suggestions were made to help Lewis: to create a bigger opening or remove his penis and invert his leftover skin to create a passage for urine from the perineum.

Lee said she considered the second option because she didn’t want Lewis to go through multiple surgeries: ‘We didn’t want to end up putting him through more surgery further down the road, so we went for option two. They basically removed his penis, then made an opening like you’d find on a female cat with the skin left behind’.

The surgery is often performed on male cats who have urinary complications where most of the penis is removed along with a small part of the bladder. Male and female cats urinate in a similar position except the male’s urine comes out toward the front.
