Last Saturday morning, the male carjacker stole Crystal Leary’s 2013 Honda Pilot from a parking lot near a meat market in Beaverton after she left the engine running and the doors unlocked. Leary told police that she went to purchase meat and milk for a few minutes while her son was left in the car unattended. The suspect entered the vehicle and drove off but didn’t know that Leary’s four-year-old son was sitting in the backseat. Minutes later, he returned to the scene and approached Leary then threatened to call the police before returning her son.

“He hopped in the car, drove it, realized there was a 4-year-old inside, and drove back and ordered her to take the child out of the car and then drove away again. We’re thankful he had the decency to bring the little one back,” said Beaverton Police Spokesman Officer Matt Handerson.

The child was unharmed and Leary said the experience taught her a lesson about safety: “As moms, we get really busy and we think we’re just running in for a second and this is just a perfect example of just letting our guards down and how terrible it could have ended.
