72-year-old Shirlene Hernandez stopped at a local gas station last Tuesday to purchase a soda from a local gas station when a thief grabbed her car keys and started attacking her. According to police, the man punched Hernandez several times in the face. Three men tried to help the great-grandmother from any further attacks and tried to restrain the man but he fled the scene in Hernandez’s vehicle.
However, his crime was cut short after authorities found him dead in the now-totaled stolen car on a nearby highway. Hernandez said she was sad when she learned about the man’s death.

“There’s a lot of people who would say what goes around comes around karma. I did not think that; the only thing I got (was) really sad because he had died. Now granted, he had hurt me, but the Lord saw fit to take him out of his misery. I just hope that if this situation happens to anybody else, that somebody will step forward, leap forward, run forward, whatever and help the person that it’s happening to,
She is expected to fully recover from her injuries but she will be unable to travel to work due to the recent incident.
“I realized – I don’t have a car. I just don’t want to quit working and so I’ve got to somehow get another car and that takes money and stuff. I’ve got to figure out what to do.”
A GoFundMe account was launched by her granddaughter, Helen Garcia, who set up an initial goal of $5,000. However, the donations have reached almost $28,000.
“Hi, my name is Helen, and I am helping my 71-year-old grandma Shirlene. On April 12th, she was carjacked from a Shell station in San Antonio on her way to work. The man who took her car hit her with the door, badly bruising her face. The man wrecked her car and totaled it, leaving her without a way to get to work or appointments. Any donation helps get her back on her feet and is greatly appreciated.”
Garcia later thanked her grandmother’s supporters in an update.
“We are in awe and so thankful for the outpouring of love and support. I don’t know how to properly say thank you to everyone.”
