Controversial political and social commentator Candace Owens is sharing her two cents on the national news with Carlee Russell, the 25-year-old nursing student from Alabama who claimed to have been abducted last week. Since Russell returned to her parents house and gave the police her statement, Owens is now comparing her to Jussie Smollett; calling her “Carlee Smollett,” and claiming, “she snatched her own wig!”

As we’ve previously shared, on Thursday (July 13), Russell went missing after pulling over on Alabama’s I-495 to help a stranded child she claimed to have seen. After calling Hoover Police and then her family, she disappeared. On Saturday (July 15), Russell returned to her parents’ home, where she lives. Police said she was safe, but in shock, and was then taken to the hospital for evaluations.
Since her return, a man claiming to be her boyfriend, Thomar Latrell Simmons, broke his silence, taking to his Instagram to share photos and videos of the two, while clearing his name of any wrongdoing in her disappearance. Russell’s mother also spoke out on Facebook and thanked the public for their prayers, while asking for privacy as they sorted through things.
Then Hoover Police Department officials held a press conference revealing that they had found zero evidence of the toddler Russell claimed to have seen walking down the interstate before her disappearance.
Authorities would go on to reveal that she had stopped at Target to grab snacks; however, they weren’t found in her car upon police arrival, but they did find her phone, purse, wig and a hat in her car that was left running. Police also shared shocking details about her internet searches before her disappearance., which included:
- “do you have to pay for an amber alert or search”
- “how to take money from a register without being caught”
- “Birmingham bus station”
- “one-way bus ticket from Birmingham to Nashville”
- (the movie) “taken”
- information about Amber alerts on her work computer
- Other searches that police say reveal her mindset that won’t be released
Amid all the hysteria online — including conspiracy theories of Russell allegedly faking her abduction and lying to police, and/or allegedly having her family involved in the alleged hoax — Candace Owens is now speaking out.
Owens took to her Instagram, and not only demanded Black people give her her praises for “yet again calling out another scam” within the community, but she also compared Russell’s actions to those of former ‘Empire‘ star Jussie Smollett — who was famously accused of faking a hate crime in Chicago. He ended up being found guilty and convicted of creating the hoax. Then in March, he filed to appeal the 150-day jail sentence his conviction ushered in.
Candace Owens not only compared Carlee Russell to Jussie Smollett, calling her “Carlee Smollett,” but she also joked about Russell “snatching her own wig,” referencing police finding her wig at the scene with her idle car.
